The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, through the National Statistics Office, released the Consumer Price Index (CPI) data for May 2026 on June 12, 2026.
According to the press release, retail inflation, measured by the year-on-year change in the All India CPI (base year 2024), stood at 3.93% for May 2026. Rural inflation was recorded at 4.25%, while urban inflation was 3.53%.
Food inflation, based on the Consumer Food Price Index (CFPI), was 4.78% year-on-year for May 2026. Rural food inflation was 4.85%, and urban food inflation was 4.66%.
Housing inflation for the month was 2.12% year-on-year, with rural housing inflation at 2.73% and urban housing inflation at 1.91%.
Among major divisions, the highest inflation was observed in personal care, social protection, and miscellaneous goods and services at 18.46%. Restaurants and accommodation services recorded 5.75% inflation, while food and beverages saw 4.55% inflation. Paan, tobacco, and intoxicants registered 4.83% inflation, and clothing and footwear inflation was 2.98%.
Items with the lowest inflation included potato, which saw a decline of 23.71%, peas at minus 11.47%, motor car and jeep at minus 7.19%, cumin (jeera) at minus 4.59%, and motor cycle and scooter at minus 3.56%.
Items with the highest inflation included silver jewellery at 155.23%, tomato at 48.43%, gold, diamond, and platinum jewellery at 40.93%, ginger at 32.49%, and raisin (kishmish) and monacca at 21.97%.
Among states with a population of more than 50 lakhs as per the 2011 Census, Telangana recorded the highest combined inflation at 6.71%, followed by Tamil Nadu at 6.15%, Andhra Pradesh at 5.60%, Karnataka at 4.59%, and Odisha at 4.54%.
The final CPI figures for April 2026 showed combined inflation at 3.48%, with rural inflation at 3.74% and urban inflation at 3.16%. The combined CFPI inflation for April 2026 was 4.20%.
Price data for the index were collected from 1,407 urban markets and 1,465 villages across all states and union territories. The response rate for May 2026 was 100% in both rural and urban markets.
The CPI for June 2026 is scheduled for release on July 13, 2026.
