According to the Statistisches Bundesamt, real production in Germany's producing sector increased by 0.7% in September 2026 compared with August 2026, on a seasonally and calendar-adjusted basis. The agency reported that production was 0.4% higher than in September 2025 on a calendar-adjusted basis. In the less volatile three-month comparison, production in the third quarter of 2026 was 0.4% lower than in the second quarter.
The August 2026 figure was revised to a 1.0% month-on-month increase, down from a preliminary reading of 2.0%. The agency attributed the comparatively large revision to supplementary company data on advance value-added tax returns in the construction sector.
Automotive and Pharmaceutical Gains Offset Construction and Machinery Declines
The overall increase in September was driven mainly by the automotive industry, where production rose 17.1% month on month on a seasonally and calendar-adjusted basis, following two months at a low level due to production changes and plant holidays. The pharmaceutical industry also contributed positively, rising 8.0% after two weaker months. By contrast, construction output fell 2.6%, and machinery production dropped 6.5% after an increase of 5.8% in August 2026.
Industrial production, defined as the producing sector excluding energy and construction, rose 1.7% in September 2026 compared with August 2026 on a seasonally and calendar-adjusted basis. Within this category, capital goods output increased 3.0%, consumer goods output rose 0.8%, and intermediate goods output edged up 0.1%. Outside industry, energy generation fell 1.2%. Industrial production was 0.3% higher than in September 2025 on a calendar-adjusted basis.
Energy-Intensive Industries
Production in energy-intensive industrial sectors rose 0.8% in September 2026 compared with August 2026 on a seasonally and calendar-adjusted basis. In the three-month comparison, output in these sectors was 3.5% lower in the third quarter of 2026 than in the second quarter. Compared with September 2025, energy-intensive production was 1.9% lower on a calendar-adjusted basis.
The agency noted that the five sectors classified as energy-intensive accounted for 77% of total industrial energy consumption and 17% of industrial gross value added in the 2021 reporting year. Around 930,000 people were employed in roughly 7,000 industrial establishments in these sectors in 2021.
Revisions and Methodology
With the September 2026 reporting month, monthly production values for construction, other vehicle manufacturing, and all aggregates derived from them were revised retroactively from January 2021. The agency cited a technical error in calculating the production index. Revision differences in month-on-month rates for the overall index ranged between plus 0.1 and minus 0.1 percentage points.
The agency said the index uses 2021 as its base year, set at 100 index points, and that seasonal and calendar adjustment was carried out using the X13 JDemetra+ method. A new version of the goods classification took effect in January 2026, replacing the 2019 edition, while the classification of economic activities used for presenting results remained unchanged.
