Japan's real wages climbed 1.5 percent in August compared with the same month a year earlier, according to Reuters, extending the run of increases to eight consecutive months and signaling a continuing recovery in pay growth. The government data, released on Wednesday, keeps the case intact for the Bank of Japan to press ahead with interest rate increases following its benchmark rate hike last month.
The August pace of real pay growth was softer than July's revised gain of 2.0 percent. Average nominal wages, which measure total cash earnings, advanced 3.8 percent to 311,364 yen, equivalent to about 1,969.66 dollars, a slower expansion than the revised 4.3 percent recorded in July.
Regular pay, or base salaries for workers, rose 3.8 percent, matching the revised 3.8 percent increase seen in July. Overtime pay growth reached 5.2 percent in August, accelerating from July's revised 4.5 percent. Special payments, which consist mostly of one-time bonuses and are typically volatile, were flat in August following a revised 5.3 percent rise in July.
The inflation rate the ministry uses to calculate the headline real wage indicator held steady from July at 2.2 percent, remaining below the year-earlier level of 3.1 percent. Separate data released last week showed annual core inflation in Japan's capital accelerating in September at its fastest pace in ten months, underscoring building price pressures and strengthening the argument for additional interest rate increases by the central bank.
The exchange rate referenced in the data was 158.0800 yen to the dollar.
