  • USD/MXN falls 0.57% to 18.56 despite broader US Dollar strength.
  • Middle East diplomatic efforts boost sentiment, though nuclear negotiations remain excluded
  • December Fed hike odds ease to 83% ahead of Mexico's GDP release.

The Mexican Peso (MXN) registers gains against the US Dollar (USD) on Monday, as USD/MXN edges down 0.57% amid improving risk appetite and US tech stocks rising on Anthropic's IPO filing, while the Greenback posts solid gains versus major FX currencies. At the time of writing, USD/MXN trades at 18.56.

USD/MXN retreats as diplomatic optimism supports risk-sensitive currencies ahead of Fed decision

Sentiment is positive amid growing speculation that talks between Iran, Turkey, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia – the Mecca Pact members – can solve the conflict between the US and Iran. Nevertheless, an Iranian official said nuclear talks were excluded. In the meantime, Iran’s President Pezeshkian said that dialogue must be free of threats and pressure, while newswires reported that the US is ready for strikes within 96 hours of US President Donald Trump orders.

Back to economics, investors are waiting for the Federal Reserve's (Fed) meeting on Tuesday and Wednesday. Money markets have priced in a 9% chance of a hike, while for December odds are at 83%, down from around 90% the previous week, according to Prime Terminal.

Traders await US Personal Consumption Expenditures data, the Fed's preferred inflation gauge, for interest-rate clues, while investors prepare for the November 3 US midterm elections.

In Mexico, the docket was empty, but traders eye the release of the Balance of Trade on Tuesday and Gross Domestic Product (GDP) figures on Friday.

USD/MXN Price Forecast: Technical outlook

In the daily chart, USD/MXN trades around 18.5650, extending its advance well above the clustered simple moving averages (SMA) pack at 17.6061 and keeping a firm bullish near-term bias. The pair is pressing into fresh highs beyond the prior downward resistance trendline, while the 14-day Relative Strength Index at 65.9 stays in positive territory but shy of overbought, suggesting strong yet not extreme upside momentum as price consolidates at elevated levels.

On the downside, immediate support is now seen at the SMA cluster near 17.61, which should act as the first buffer on any corrective pullback, ahead of the more distant horizontal floor at 16.89. With no clearly defined resistance levels from the current dataset overhead, upside progress would likely be driven by momentum and sentiment until a new technical barrier is carved out by price action.

Mexican Peso FAQs

The Mexican Peso (MXN) is the most traded currency among its Latin American peers. Its value is broadly determined by the performance of the Mexican economy, the country’s central bank’s policy, the amount of foreign investment in the country and even the levels of remittances sent by Mexicans who live abroad, particularly in the United States. Geopolitical trends can also move MXN: for example, the process of nearshoring – or the decision by some firms to relocate manufacturing capacity and supply chains closer to their home countries – is also seen as a catalyst for the Mexican currency as the country is considered a key manufacturing hub in the American continent. Another catalyst for MXN is Oil prices as Mexico is a key exporter of the commodity.

The main objective of Mexico’s central bank, also known as Banxico, is to maintain inflation at low and stable levels (at or close to its target of 3%, the midpoint in a tolerance band of between 2% and 4%). To this end, the bank sets an appropriate level of interest rates. When inflation is too high, Banxico will attempt to tame it by raising interest rates, making it more expensive for households and businesses to borrow money, thus cooling demand and the overall economy. Higher interest rates are generally positive for the Mexican Peso (MXN) as they lead to higher yields, making the country a more attractive place for investors. On the contrary, lower interest rates tend to weaken MXN.

Macroeconomic data releases are key to assess the state of the economy and can have an impact on the Mexican Peso (MXN) valuation. A strong Mexican economy, based on high economic growth, low unemployment and high confidence is good for MXN. Not only does it attract more foreign investment but it may encourage the Bank of Mexico (Banxico) to increase interest rates, particularly if this strength comes together with elevated inflation. However, if economic data is weak, MXN is likely to depreciate.

As an emerging-market currency, the Mexican Peso (MXN) tends to strive during risk-on periods, or when investors perceive that broader market risks are low and thus are eager to engage with investments that carry a higher risk. Conversely, MXN tends to weaken at times of market turbulence or economic uncertainty as investors tend to sell higher-risk assets and flee to the more-stable safe havens.
