Should You Buy Microsoft Stock (MSFT) in October? 3 Things Investors Need to Know
  • MSFT price is trading near $530, less than 5% below its previous record high of around $555.

  • Azure revenue jumped 43% YoY, while Microsoft's commercial remaining performance obligations surged 84% to $678 billion.

  • October 28 earnings could trigger the next major move, with bullish analyst targets extending toward $665–$725.

Microsoft stock has rallied sharply into October and is now trading near its record high, putting investors at a familiar crossroads: buy the momentum or wait for a better entry? Strong Azure growth, accelerating AI demand and bullish Wall Street targets are keeping the long-term case intact. But with MSFT trading near $530 and earnings approaching on October 28, expectations are high. The next earnings report could determine whether Microsoft breaks into new highs or pulls back.

A Fresh Analyst Upgrade Strengthens the Bull Case

Microsoft’s recent rally is gaining support from Wall Street. Melius Research upgraded MSFT from Hold to Buy and raised its price target from $465 to $665. Analyst Ben Reitzes cited Microsoft’s enterprise position, cybersecurity capabilities and approach to AI as reasons for greater confidence in the stock. The $665 target implies roughly 25% upside from the latest price.

The broader analyst picture is also bullish. Current consensus data puts the average target near $588, with the stock carrying a Strong Buy consensus.

Azure Is Still the Number One Reason to Own MSFT Stock

Microsoft’s cloud business remains the core growth engine. Azure and other cloud services revenue increased 43% year over year in the latest quarter, while Intelligent Cloud revenue rose 32%. Microsoft Cloud revenue reached $59.3 billion, up 27%.

Azure has also crossed the $100 billion annual revenue threshold, giving Microsoft a much larger base from which to monetize the AI boom.

The October earnings report will show whether that growth rate can hold. If Azure comes in above expectations and management raises its outlook, investors could have a strong reason to push MSFT through its previous high.

Could MSFT Stock Deliver Another Earnings Surprise?

This is where the October setup gets interesting. Microsoft has beaten earnings estimates for six consecutive quarters, according to recent market analysis. The next report is scheduled for October 28. Current market data lists that as Microsoft’s expected earnings date.

The previous quarter already produced a sizable beat, with reported EPS of $4.74 versus a $4.24 consensus estimate and revenue of $90.01 billion versus an $87.62 billion estimate.

Another upside surprise would be important because MSFT stock has already rallied substantially. A beat on revenue and EPS, combined with stronger Azure guidance, could provide the catalyst for a new high.

MSFT Stock Price: $555 Is the Next Big Test

MSFT stock price closed at $529.76, while its previous record high stands near $555.45. The stock is now less than 5% below that level. A decisive breakout above $555 would put Microsoft into new-high territory. Technical setup following a confirmed breakout point toward the $700–$750 range, although those targets depend on the rally maintaining momentum.

On the downside, $465–$480 is the key support area. A break below that zone would weaken the current bullish structure.

What’s Next For MSFT Stock?

Microsoft remains attractive for long-term investors, supported by strong Azure growth, expanding AI demand and a large contracted backlog. However, with MSFT near its record high, the risk-reward is less favorable for aggressive buying. The October 28 earnings report could decide the next move. A strong Azure outlook and earnings beat could push MSFT above $555, while weaker guidance could trigger a pullback.
